Gateway LT2113u 10.1-Inch Red Netbook – Over 10 Hours of Battery Life

I waited a while to get this computer because I thought it had everything that I wanted in a Netbook. Wireless N, windows XP, 10 hours of battery life, 160 GB hard drive. It doesn’t have half of these. It will ONLY connect to WIRELESS G NOT wireless N as advertised. It only has about 8 hours of battery, it even said so right on a sticker that came on the device, but on AMAZON.com and Gatwaydotcom it says over 10 hours. It doesn’t have a 160gb hard drive. I understand that some of the hard drive will be used for the operating system and programs but the computer says the maximum capacity of this hard drive is only 138, that is not 160. Maybe I misunderstand how windows works but I’m pretty sure for all my other computers under capacity it said whatever the actual capacity of the hard drive was and then how much of that capacity was available. I feel lied to. I waited about a month for this computer to be released. I’m so disappointed.
UPDATE 3/09/2010
It connects to wireless N but not on a DUALBAND, which is what I have at home and the highest it will connect is 130Mps, my other wireless N cards connect over 200Mps!
The battery lasts a while depending on what you are doing. When I take notes in class and only use Microsoft word all day it will last about 14 hours? Give or take. When I web browse it reduces the battery a lot, you’ll get about 8-10 maybe less hours if you are web browsing and running multiple programs.
The screen is really shiny and ANNOYING. I should have got a matte finished screen but that wasn’t an option with this specific model that I wanted (windows XP Wireless N over 10 hours of battery life).
The red backing of the computer gets really smudged easily, but it is really pretty when it’s clean.
I love the key board. It is flat like my friend mac keyboard so the keys have a bigger surface area than my big lap tops keyboard. I don’t have a hard time typing.
The multi touch pad is really great. You can shrink or enlarge webpages with just a touch. It is very sensitive though and I hit it on accident from time to time.
Due to all the extra programs and them adding a 10GB or more backup you only get about 120GB. I’m still really mad about that.
Overall I am happy with my purchase. I would buy a netbook again and I might buy a Gateway again, not sure. If they made it a better wireless N card and let you choose matte screen I would recommend it to a friend, until then I will not.
I guess if you’re looking for a netbook with real wireless N don’t buy this. If you want a lot of battery life do. If you can’t stand shiny screens don’t.

Overview
Good device, has everything that I expected. Just got this netbook yesterday and tried it in class today, I would say it worked pretty well.
Pro
Bluetooth: I am going to sync my phone with this netbook through bluetooth to share calendars, tasks, etc. (Haven’t got this part worked out yet, but I am confident it will work eventually.)
Screen: Very bright
Speaker: Not bad
Recover program: Very good. Gateway has its own recovery software to restore this netbook to factory default rather conveniently. (yes, I messed up the netbook the first night after some experiments with different programs X)
Battery: Pretty good, used it all day in class without having to recharge it.
Windows XP: I need this for certain programs that I am keeping to use which won’t work on Windows 7.
Con
Keyboard: Small, but it’s probably a problem for all netbooks.
Touch pad: not distinct enough to feel where it is when not looking at it. I am used to the touch pad on my 17 inch laptop, which has its touch pad more to the left, and this netbook’s touch pad is more centerly placed, and it is practically on the same surface of the palm rest, therefore it is easy for me to keep touching areas outside of the touch pad and only to realize that the mouse cursor is not going anywhere…
Holding: Not really a good place to grab the netbook. I tried to grab the joint area between the screen and the keyboard only to realize that I accidentally thumbed on the power button and shut down the computer, I would suggest location of the power button to be adjusted… Though I guess you can reassign what happens after pressing on the power button to prevent the accident from happening.
Memory upgrade: I haven’t found the maximum memory for this device anywhere, maybe because it is new. I would certainly hope Gateway would release information on how to upgrade memory on this device. Basically, I figured out the memory type, but not sure of the maximum memory support on this device.
Summery
Does everything a netbook supposed to do with a design that I like, though there are rooms for improvements.

I’ve never had a Netbook before but this one exceeded my expectations. One quirk I’ve noticed is the connection to the wireless network (occasionally I have to “repair” the wireless connection after starting up the netbook to acquire the network address), but once it’s connected the speeds are very fast as this includes 802.11n networking. The keyboard is easy to use as they are larger keypad buttons and I don’t feel too uncomfortable typing on it. I recommend getting Google Chrome as an internet browser and installing it on this netbook. Also, no need to purchase Norton anti-virus as Microsoft provides a free antivirus software called Microsoft Security Essentials. The battery life on this netbook is also incredible as it lasts up to 10 hours without having to plug it in. This Gateway Netbook is definitely worth the 330 dollars it was priced at when I bought it with free shipping.

I love Gateway omputers, and this netbook is no exception. Runs great, great picture, excellent battery. I don’t know much about computers, but I adore this netbook. As long as you don’t download a bunch of stuff, this will run flawlessly. Great for kids too.

This is the first Netbook I purchased. We use the netbook several times a day. It has the the ability to do anything we need done. The battery life is tremendous. I reccommend this item.
