Unfortunately, a lot of these reviews are misleading and overly enthusiastic. The fact is it is better than two others that I have tried and it sits well on the stand however the stand is NOT meant for use in your lap. I still have to place it on something else because there are vents underneath that do not clear if it is sitting in your lap.
After owning this for better than a month now I can tell you that the reason it cools at all is because of the material it is made of; the fans are quiet, they DO NOT put out a lot of air BUT they keep the base cool which in turn keeps the computer somewhat cooler than it would be on its’ own.
For those who wonder, the fans blow toward the computer not pulling away.
The best cooler I’ve had so far is too small for my Toshiba Satellite A305 and that would be the Targus model I have for my smaller Dell.

The cooler looks great. But the airflow is really low, and my MacBook Pro 15″ still has its fans running loudly at top speed. Get something cheaper, or a table fan and just blow it at your laptop.

I just bought one of these things (a ZalmanZM-NC2000). It certainly looks nice, and the Dell XPS M1710 sits on it nicely. (It’s a 17″ laptop – fan intakes on the bottom in the back.)
There are only two problems.
1) It doesn’t cool the laptop. (I monitor temps, and it made no difference.)
2) It’s VERY uncomfortable on your lap – the rear aluminum frame cuts across your legs.
Oh, yes. If you put it on your lap, you cover the fan inlets (the temp monitoring I did for 1 above was on a table.)
So unless your looking for an expensive way to prop your laptop on your desk, look elsewhere for a solution to the hot lap problem. What a waste of money.

This cooler reduced the heat of my notebook quite well. CPU/GPU temperatures went down ~10C. I was hoping it would lower the HDD temp a bit, because I have a high temp HDD, but it only reduced about 5C. Note: These can vary to each individuals/computer.
I wish it had bigger fans with more power. Sound is noticeable in highest setting.

My silver ZM-NC2000 looks very nice and functional but I am VERY disappointed that it didn’t come with the usb cable that is needed to power the fans. I contacted Zalman the manufacturer SO MANY times. Unfortunately they are not in the US (maybe) so I could not call them but instead emailed both their Tech Support AND Sales email addresses. Nobody replied at all! All I want is the USB power cable! Because of this mistake, I am not happy with paying more than $60 for a cooling pad.
